And I got my EYES back!

I was sitting in a room full of machines, having zillions of emotions in my mind and only one expression of fear on my face. A well-dressed lady in a black pantsuit with a mask on her face, and gloves in her hands entered the room. She was also carrying some unusual stuff in her hand- a weird-looking rob, round cotton pads, paper slippers, and a new surgical mask.

As soon as she noticed anxiety on my face, she removed her mask and comforted me with her generous smile. It was calming enough to settle down the hustle going in my mind. Then in her sweet confident voice, she said, “Don't worry, everything will be perfectly fine.”

She locked the door and asked me to remove my shoes and jacket. In a gentle tone, she commanded me to raise both of my hands so that she can drape me into that knee-length robe. She treated me like her kid while knotting that robe and reassured me if I am okay or not. Finally, after a few minutes, she ended the draping and gave me two instructions.

She instructed me not to panic and speak up whenever I feel anything is going wrong. Further, she told me that the whole procedure would only take 15 minutes. She left the room and after a few minutes called me for my LASIK surgery.

While I was moving across the hallway, I had thousands of thoughts running in my mind about science, philosophy, humanity, and whatnot. I was constantly revising the “Diagram of Eye” to divert my thoughts and soothing myself by murmuring “Nothing will happen, I’ll be having a crystal clear eyesight in a few minutes.”

Finally, I entered the “Operation Theatre” where two doctors and three of their assistants were waiting for me. They told me a few things-

  1. I have to start the operation on my own by focussing on green laser light coming from the instrument hanging over my head.
  2. Cotton pads will be placed above my ears so that eye drops won’t trickle down and,
  3. If at any point in time I’ll feel uncomfortable, I can speak to doctors around.

AND finally, they wished me good luck.

I lied down on the operation bed with my eyes wide open.

The instrument hanging in the air was bought down so that I can focus on the green light and my operation can start. Within a few seconds, the treatment of my eyes began. With a few timers in the background, multiple rounds of eye drops, and green laser light, my operation for both eyes was successfully completed in 15 minutes.

Without even touching me or my eyes, doctors bought back my vision to 6/6 in merely a few minutes. They congratulated and confirmed to me if I could see the painting hanging on the wall without my spectacles. I was surprised and shocked at the same time. How far technology has gone!

Now walking out through the hallway, I had a different set of mind with all-new questions like how reliable the operation was, when can I resume my office, how technology can modify human machinery, and so on.

It's been a few months and everything is going well. Amid the pandemic, I got my contactless LASIK surgery done and got 6/6 vision.
